Ok, bit early to start this, but I suppose all my diagrams and specultion can go into this thread. I'll start of with a quick diagram of how I'd like the sump system to work.
<a href='http://img210.imageshack.us/my.php?image=weirdiagram8as.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a>
The overflow part ensure that the sump will never overflow, and also protects fish and other livestock. The diagrams only a 5 minute job, so I hope you understand it all.

Actually, that made a lot of sense - even I understood it - I know get what a sump is all about. I had a good idea - but never really "got" it.

I didn't say before, but that diagram is a Wier system.

OH. Lol, uhhhh.... well ok - I now get how a wier system works.
So what/how is a sump? I guess it's something similar...
Diagrams are good lol!

All a sump is a smaller tank underneath the main tank which is used to store all the equipment such as heaters and skimmers. They may also be used as an external filter.

<a href='http://img7.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sump8hl.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a>
This is a diagram of how I was going to use the sump, but now I've decided it will just be a plain sump, possibly with some LR and a powerhead in for extra filtration.

Okay, kind of decided on dimensions. It'll be 25x25x40 which I've worked out (courtesy of Aqua-Pet's calculator) will be 410l. Add that to a 90l sump (same size and type as my community tank) and it equals 500l. 100l less than I was hoping for, but still good. The sizes are subject to massive changes though.

Ahhh - so the basic idea is almost the same... gotcha. In the weir case - it falls into the mech - in the sump case, it is drawn by flow... That right?
