his scales behind his head are standing up. he's swimming around frantically (although he's usually quite hyper) but yesterday he was swimming around and around, not in small circles but up and down in a short lines on the bottom of the tank. his scales are so ruffled it looks like he has a dent on his nose. dont know how else to describe it. he doesnt look streamlined.

i have quarantined him and commenced treatment with eSHa2000. didn't know what else to do. he was eating yesterday but hasnt eaten since i moved him. the sick tank is small and i dunno if he's too distressed to eat cos he's on his own, or if he's too sick.

he's just swimming up and down like a madman. he's so hyper it's difficult to even see what's actually happening with his scales... :( it's terrible to see him this way. what do u guys think is wrong with him? can danios get dropsy? his body is still straight. and the ruffled scales dont even go half way down his back. just kind of from behind his eyes on along his spine. actually, almost like a mini lions mane, but not round his 'neck', only on top. and his eyes aren't bulging, and his scales arent red or discoloured at the base.

it will be impossible to take a pic, already tried but he's WAY too fast, there's too much of a delay with the damn digital camera anyway! and he's just a blur if i do manage to get him.

all fish can get dropsy, but he would have seemed bloated and most of his scales would have stuck out. is the body bent in any way?
can you take a better look at his nose?

try using the flash for the pic.

How odd. Pop some thick coverage plants in there, see if that helps him chill out. If he has somewhere to hide, he should settle down a little. Also, turn the lights out.
Then you should be able to take a photo of him. That's what I had to do to take photos of Erik - my first shy dojo.

It sounds like dropsy to me. I found this link, and if you scroll down to the bit about dropsy, there is a pic of a danio. Does he look like this?

BEWARE- there are some really horrible pics of fish diseases here, so not one for the squeemish.

i'm a student nurse so seen and smelt a lot worse, but thanx for the warning.

excellent site! well, i thought he looked a bit better yesterday (he doesnt look like the fish in the pic of the golden danio thank goodness!) so i put him in his tank again. he is swimming around like the fruit loop hat he is and he is eating like pig! (so in short back to his normal self again!)

very odd in deed!

oh, and there are loads of plants in the tank where he can hide and chill but he is totally disinterested! he's currently swimming around in the biggest clearing he can find. weirdo!

Yay FruitLoop! Good to hear he's back on form. Might of been due to sudden changes - new scary friends etc.
Has he got a name? He'll end up being FruitLoop at this rate Lol!
(That's why Erwin is often called Fruitcake, and Rex is aka WingNut.)
