Do any of you add anything to the water to stop shell rot? i.e. to make the water contain more calcium (or whatever makes the shell stronger)

i already live in a calcium enriched, hard water area, so there's no need for me to add anything :D

Lucky for you :P I had an Apple Snail a while ago and the above problem happened (shell errosion) but I am thinking about getting another, but I don't want the same to happen. I may have to get some liquid calcium or something

I have 2 apple snails and am hoping they will breed but havent had any luck yet. They are about 3mo old and a good inch plus in size. Is there something I need to do to encourage them to lay eggs so Ill have more?

you need to have at least 2inches of glass above the water & the cover glass needs to be quite tight so that the air stays moist and warm. the main thing of cource is to have a guy & a girl: unlike with other snails, you do get guys and girls with apples.

Ok, now I know part of my problem, too much water in my tank there in. Is there a way to tell the boys from the girls? Be my luck that I have both of the same sex.

Beautiful snails Kat! I too love apple snails, they are so active and fun to watch. My cana is also a great pet, she love to be picked up and climb all over my hands and arms. She eats right out of my hand :). Can't wait until she gets even bigger than she allready has since I got her.

check applesnail.net's forums for pictures on sexing snails. It takes awhile sometimes for them to come out so you can see lol.
