Urban myth or for real ?

Postby The fish shed » 2006-05-17 14:54

Ok

I have been told that the bigger the filter on a smaller tank means that you can over stock a little.

Is this true ?

Not that I want to do it but I am just wondering.

For example :- 99 UK gallons ( 48 " x 24" x 24" ) with a fluval FX5 external filter.

Thanks for any feed back on this.

you can start overstocking, but the problem (& this is why it's considered to be a myth) is that many ppl take that as they can put larger fish in the tank which they shouldn't do. also this will cause aggression in otherwise moderately behaved fish and will result in deaths in aggressive fish... so the tankmates have to be all extremely peaceful fish who do not mind being slightly cramped (we're talking usually shoaling fish)

this does not apply to bottom or surface dwellers because you are not increasing the bottom/surface area

& then there's also the african cichlids...

I raise very large aggressive cichlids...very aggressive...I do overstock my tanks because it DECREASES aggression......and, I do over filtrate my tanks...alot!!!...my 250 gallon tanks has three very large fluvals, one very large eheim, two of the largest aqua clears and an undergravel with large power heads (which is actually useless with large Midas and labiatums and dovii and butters as they dig up holes all day long but it keeps a good circulation regardless....my 150 gallon tank is about the same with filtration, and, actually, all my tanks have about 5 times the filtration that's needed....

[SIZE=1][SIZE=1][SIZE=1][SIZE=1][SIZE=1][SIZE=1]That would be true to a degree - I pulled it off to quite a scale a while back before my last upgrade.

My advice - don't push your luck and keep a VERY close eye on everything - types of fish, agression etc - and be prepared to try wacky things. The strange situation sometimes calls for odd solutions - it's one to play with.

You will need LOTS of plants to cope with the Nitrates etc.

I managed a platinum koi, Goldfish, Large dojo loach, 2 hillstreams AND 2 khulis in a one foot tank - pushing my luck, but it worked well for the time I needed it. They are now upgraded into a bigger tank, and are very happy and healthy.

Zelda the Koiboy is happy - he's grown another inch since.

Fish Shed, I;m afraid its for real and a myth

I take it your a good fish keeper (sorry dont really know you) and if so, then a bigger filter will help.

But I run normal size filters on normal size tanks which at times can be over stocked.

It always (even with bigger filters) comes down to management.

Be a good fishkeeper and you can almost do what you want ;)
I'm good looking, your all good looking. But the wife tells me not to drink so much :)<br><span style='color:blue'><a href='http://www.aquaauction.co.uk' target='_blank'>AquaAuction.co.uk</a></span> : <span style='color:green'><a href='http://www.aquaauction.co.uk/otheritems-100080-Davy.html' target='_blank'>Selling stuff</a></span> : <span style='color:gray'><a href='http://homepages.tesco.net/~davyreynolds' target='_blank'>TropicalAquariums.info</a></span> : <span style='color:purple'><a href='http://www.sfc-berlin.de/Free%20Stuff/Free%20Stuff%20Pics/No%20Money%202.jpg' target='_blank'>My bank Account</a></span>

You certainly know how to roe, oops, row a boat without rocking it :lol1: I struggled in making a reply to this topic, for fear of offending. Yours is a good post, it says it all...the last sentence and I Quote you; "Be a good fishkeeper and you can almost do what you want you". Aint that the truth ;)

Yes, a very good way to put it Codfather!

I think you are right in a way. As long as, like Kat says, the fish are not being stunted due to their lack of space, and you are willing to put in a little bit of extra work, then you can get away with most things. Even with the extra filtration, the overstocking could mean that you have to step up water changes to keep the system stable.

I'm pretty lucky with my setup - I only need to WC once a week, but I do a 30% and make sure the gravel is hoovered and stirred.
With Zelda the Koiboy and his favourite hobby of pulling apart plants, I end up netting bits out every couple of days - that helps.
