the lps was rubbish only little bowls there, going to try the lfs tomorrow.

You could go for a smaller tank, but you'd need to seriously oversize the filter.
My goldie Rex is about 3.5 in long in a 14" tank with a massive PF2 filter. He prob won't get any bigger, as he's a comet, but his partner Zelda (my Platinum Koi) will do. Again - no clue how big he will actually end up, but he's safe in there with the oversized PF2 and lots of plants.

I had 3 comets and they grew to 7inches before i had to give them away.

Wow - nice. Rex grew quite substantially the first year, but he seems to have slowed down greatly since...
