White spot.... fin rot.... dead fish... HELP!

Hi everyone

I've had a RIGHT time of it lately - please help!

Before we start, i'd like to say that i'm not a complete noob. I know about water parameters, the nitrogen cycle, and test my water regularly.

Set up - 6 uk gal tank, 2 sword tails, 1 gourami (1 has JUST died), 5 guppies

Readings: ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 10, pH 7

Right - here's the problems:

About 6 weeks ago I foolishly added a new swordtail without putting her in an isolation tank first. Hence the white spot outbreak. I managed to catch it just in time with 2 deaths (1 was the sword I bought, and the other was 1 guppy). I treated the tank according to the treatment instructions for a fortnight, brought the temperature up to 80, and did weekly water changes. All fine.

However.... here's my second mistake.... my sister had 6 guppies, all of which died one by one of fin rot (i blame the biorb). The one remaining fish, who looked absolutely perfect, went in my tank whilst she cleaned her tank and started the cycle again. Now (and i understand that fin rot is generally caused by poor water quality), one of my gouramis has died with rotten fins, my male sword has a rotten fin and 2 of the guppies have rotten tails.

What do I do? This is a nightmare! The only thing i CAN think of is that i have recently painted the walls in the room the tank is in, but the tank was covered with good aeration the whole time.... surely that can't be the cause??? Please help me!!

hey...

Im not really sure how the painting fumes would affect water, if at all, so i will leave that for someone else to answer.

Fin rot is contagious and so provided your water params are as above its pretty much a good pin pointer of the cause; your sisters guppy. This guppy probably had fin rot even though it looked fine.
Also, we have to remember that stress can be a contributing factor to weaken a fish. getting whitespot, in the grand scheme of things for a fish life i think would be classed as stress and so adding a fish with fin rot with stressed, weakened fish meant they have developed the fin rot.

Treatment wise,
I would purchase some Fin Rot treatment, chemicals are not the nicest things to add to tanks but times like these they can be a saviour.
Some treatments mention you should around 30% water change
before the treatment and some mention you should do x days after the first treatment.
Also, if you have carbon in your filter, remember to take out the carbon when treating. The carbon would render the treatment ineffective.

Some people may also recommend salts but this is something that i have never tried and so again i will leave that for someone else.

Thanks very much for your help.

I was a little worried about treating the tank for fin rot so soon after the treatment for ich. I have literally only just a few days ago put the last treatment in there.

Tonight, i'll do a big water change, add a little salt (i've used salt before), and put some fin rot treatment in.... not that i've ever had much luck with fin rot treatment in the past, but i'll give it another go!

Checked on them all this morning - no more casualties as yet. Will keep you updated.

Well, I can tell you now you're not a complete noob - most don't know about half of the things you've mentioned, well done.

Interpet's finrot treatment is supposed to be very good - what were the readings last time you checked your tank? Some meds can crash the cycle, causing even more problems - which MIGHT be why you've had a sudden onset.

Paint fumes and smoke, perfumes etc can affect your tank - water "sucks" up things out of the air. Using carbon in your filter will help to eliminate this problem, just remember to change it every 4-6 weeks :)

Anything I've missed?

Yep, just one thing you missed IBF: Caggi, take the carbon out of the filter if you are using medications!

As for fin rot treatment, I would recommend eSHa 2000 as it seems to be the most effective out of all I used, although it is rather expensive.

Also just to warn you, the swordtails will probably outgorw the 6 gallon at some point in the future, and so might the gourami (depending on the species).

Hello everyone again! Thanks for your help and suggestions.

Right - i've lost another fish on the weekend - one of the original guppies who suffered fin rot - he was on his last legs (or fins ... oh dear) anyway.

My tank is still cycled.... there's still nitrate there which is surprising considering all the moving about i've been doing lately. The tank has been moved from the painted room, upstairs into a nice cool bedroom where things are much more relaxed!! Readings go something like this:

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate <20
pH 7

So - things are still pretty much the same.

Anyway - since my last post, i've done a water change. I haven't added anymore treatment - it says not to actually. I've put a bit of salt in there too.

There's no carbon in my filter - i took that out ages ago when treating for ich. Only had it in there for a little while in the first place to be honest, because i'd added a piece of bog wood which was staining the water (and still is).

Kittykat.... don't worry about the swords or the gourami... i'm literally waiting for a new floor to be delivered and laid, and i'll be getting a brand new HUGE tank!! So they'll all live (hopefully) happily ever after in there. Besides... the female sword had babies about 2 months ago, so i have 16 babies to consider on top of all of this, and Ronnie the gourami is getting rather cross about his bubble nesting skills being ruined by the filter which i've put just above the water so as to increase the aeration!

Does anyone know of any food i can feed them that could help their immune system, or does this not matter with things like fin rot?? At the moment, they get a bit of everything.... flake food, daphnia, blood worm, krill, brine shrimp, as well as greens like spinage etc.... just wondered if there's anything that's better?! I think i'm getting a bit desperate now!

Thanks again!

Guppies are unusually susceptible to fin rot because of their week genetics.

Nooo... the fact that your tank is still cycled is shown by the fact that there is no ammonia and nitrites, not that there is nitrates (those are present in most water, even your tap water) :)

Salt will generally help fish and it also kills off many freshwater parasites as they are intolerant to it. I would say that you should keep up the water changes as that should help reduce the number of free floating bacteria etc. Small water changes (as little as 5%) very often are the best.

Looks like you've done your research! :) Well, good luck with the new tank and keep us posted on how it goes ;)

You could try mixing in pure garlic puree with their food and feeding that... most of my fish refuse to eat it until they get a bit on the hungry side, but the addition of garlic to their diet does them a whole lot of good! Something you can do instead is to float a crushed clove of garlic (in a net) in the tank - but I'll warn you that this is VERY stinky!

Let us know how you get on :)
