QOTM January!

The monthly Quiz!

Postby Indigo Blue Fish » 2007-01-09 22:27

Just an easy one, seeing as there hasn't been one in a little while :)
Can't be doing with all you rusty keepers out there! :P

2 points to be had for each of these!

1.) What is/are this/these and what do they belong to?

Image

2.) What does "Rete Mirabile" mean, and what is it?

3.) What's this? (second point for the latin name)

Image

4.) What is a "Lateral line" and what is it for?

5.) What's this, and what from?

Image

6.) What is a "Feather Duster"? (second point for a latin name)

And finally, a fiddly one:

7.) What is "Exophtalmia" and how does it happen?

Please PM or email all answers to me, thanks! Closes: 1st Feb.

Thank you - so how come you haven't entered any answers? Lol!

I've only had one reply so far - I'll make it twice as hard next time if I don't get any more answers...

Oh, to make things interesting:

If the winner is in the UK (and after announcement supplies address) they will get a mystery aquatic parcel, including a young apple snail as a prize!
(No postal charges either!)

And the winner is... OXYMORON!
You'll have an apple and a mystery prize on the way shortly!
Thank you!

Answers:
1 - Image

Yup, you got it! It's the barbels from a Dojo loach, kindly donated by Erwin.

2 - It's a fine net of veins to control the swim bladder, supplying gas to inflate it!

3 - Image

One of Kat's malaysian trumpet snails - Melanoides tuberculata

4 - The lateral line is a clever sensory organ. Sort of like ears for fish - they detect vibrations in the water, as well as many other things.

5 - Image

The tail of one of Kat's HB guppies!

6 - A type of marine worm, believe it or not! The most common one in the aquatic trade is Sabellastarte indica.

7 - Exophtalmia - commonly known as "pop eye". There are LOTS of causes for this, bacterial infctions, embolisms, vitamin A deficiencies or even rough handling. Bacterial infection can be solved with amoxicillin apparantly.

I still have your address, no problems.
