One of the Admins Kev wrote a great article about the equipment you will need for a marine tank as well as setting one up.

Your proposed stocking plan for a 50 gallon tank is pretty high in my opinion. The only real species of Clownfish that can coexist together would be Ocellaris and Percula. I would personally only go with two Clownfish as it will leave room for other fish if you decide to add more. Damsels are very aggressive fish so housing multiple Damsels in a tank there is a good chance of having territorial disputes. With that said if you do decide to go with a Damsel keep just one and pick a smaller species such as Yellow Tail, Fiji Blue, Orangetail, or Four Stripe. Depending on your filtration, maintenance routine, etc I would say that you could stock a 50g with 4 maybe 5 small fish.
Yes marine aquariums are generally very expensive to setup and to keep running. A simple Fish Only With Live Rock tank can be set up with minimal equipment and the cost wouldn't be too bad.
