Do any of you guys know of a SAC that doesn't mind hard water? I really want to do a SA aquascape but I'm concerned that the only cichlids that can tolerate my water chemistry here without alterations is Africans. Any ideas? And another note, I DO NOT want to put African cichlids in a SA aquascape and vice versa, if I have to compromise my aquascape sobeit.

Nothing happened, the colors didn't fade or wash off onto the sponge or my fingers when I touched it like it would have it would have if it was say rust. Haven't checked online to see if we have rainbow rock but, I know now that the color in the rock won't fade or blur with scrubbing.

The reason I want this rock so much if I haven't stated earlier, is because the whole thing is naturally cave shaped, and if I keep the kribs like planned, it should really help!

Well, sounds to me as if it should be fine..

man-alive wrote:EDIT: I have been looking online and so far can't find anything solid. If you know of a website I should look at, I'm lost so far.

Sorry, can't help you there either!

man-alive wrote:EDIT: Ok just boiled the rock and its been scrubbed. Now it seems to faintly glitter all over if looked at right. One spot of the rock slightly larger than the size of an american half dollar glitters pretty good, this spot is also not very rough like fools gold but a little more smoother. Does this shed more light onto what it might be?

Not to me.. Are the glittery parts gold or clear..? Granite, for example contains quartz, which is clear/white and glittery, but does not pose any threat to fish. Also many rocks may contain feldspar, which is also fine. On the other hand, pyrite (fool's gold) is quite dangerous and can't be put in with fish.

There are a couple of species of Gymnogeophagus which you could try, mainly Gymnogeophagus rhabdotus, and you can probably only keep a pair at most of those because they get quite large and are territorial.. depending on what you have in mind, they might not be suitable as they will pull up plants and require a "cool water" environment for part of the year. Have you looked at the CAs? They come from a similar environment as some of the SAs, but are more tolerant of hard water. I am thinking Herotilapia multispinosa (Rainbow Cichlid), Thorichthys meeki (Firemouth) and Thorichthys ellioti, but again, the last two are ranging into the "aggressive" category so might not be what you want.

You realise that there are quite a few African cichlids who actually live in exactly the same conditions as the "classical" SAs? Or are these out of the question too?

I can't seem to find what your tap water pH is..? There are quite a lot of SAs who will be happy in neutral water, even including some of the Apistogrammas.

No, No I don't mind African cichlids, I just wanted to have a heavily planted aquascape and the first thing in my mind was SA. I will most definately look into the African ones that live in enviroments like that, and sorry SA CA, to me I guess as a newbie I didn't see too much difference so no, there is nothing wrong with centrals either. I guess I'm trying to find something that pleases me to the eye as far as aquascape goes but still stay respectfull of geography.

So you are saying that South American Cichlids (Convicts?) are good with plants?

Most south American cichlids are good with plants, but not convicts.. there are not very good with plants. Although Java fern and Anubias sp. might survive if you attach them well to wood (best) or rocks.

yeah I tried my luck with an Amazon Sword plant, they are picking at it little by little. I was looking at those plants that are inside of wood, I like the way they look, but sometimes the prices scare me!! LOL I will keep you updated KittyKat. You are so very helpful.

Driftwood with plants growing out of it. I forget the name. A lot of people use things like this in their tanks.

I think "plants on driftwood" is meant here.. Java moss, Java fern, Anubias sp. being the usual ones that are attached :)
